高千穂町は宮崎県北部、九州脊梁山地のほぼ中央にあります。天岩戸、天安河原、くしふるの峰など神話の舞台と伝えられる地や神々を祀る神社が数多くあることから「神話の里」と言われています。豊かな自然も多く残り、パワースポットとしても注目されている癒しの地です。

Takachiho Town is located in the northern part of Miyazaki Prefecture, near the center of the Kyushu Seiryo Mountains. Known as the “Village of Myths,” it features many shrines dedicated to deities and sites where myths are said to have occurred, such as Ama-no-Iwato, Ama-no-Kawara, and Kushifuru-no-mine. It is also renowned as a healing place and a popular power spot, retaining much of its rich natural beauty.

高千穂峡 Takachiho Gorge

太古の昔、阿蘇山の火山活動によって噴出した火砕流が五ヶ瀬川に沿って帯状に流れ出し、急激に冷却されたために柱状節理のすばらしい懸崖となった峡谷で、高いところで100m、平均80mの断崖が東西に約7キロに渡って続いています。昭和9年には「五箇瀬川峡谷」として国の名勝・天然記念物指定されています。

In prehistoric times, the pyroclastic eruptions from Mount Aso flowed out in a band along the Gokase River and cooled rapidly, creating beautiful columnar jointed cliffs along the Gokase River. These cliffs, which reach up to 100 meters high and 80 meters on average, stretch for about 7 kilometers east to west. In 1934, this area was designated as a national scenic beauty and natural monument as “Gokasegawa Gorge.”

日本の滝百選に指定されている名瀑であり、約17メートルの高さから水面に落ちる様は、高千穂峡を象徴する風景。天孫降臨の際、この地に水がなかったので、天村雲命(アメノムラクモノミコト)が水種を移した「天真名井」から湧き出る水が水源の滝と伝えられています。

Manai Falls

This renowned waterfall, selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan, features a 17-meter drop, creating a symbolic scene of Takachiho Gorge. It is said that the water source of the waterfall comes from the “Ama-no-Manai” spring, and was brought to this area by “Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Mikoto” during the divine descent.

天岩戸神社 西本宮 Amanoiwato Shrine (West Main Shrine)

神話の中で天照大神様が隠れこもったとされる聖地・天岩戸を祀る神社です。川の対岸にある天岩戸そのものを御神体としているため、社殿には御神体を納める本殿がなく、拝殿のみの造りです。その背後には天岩戸を直接拝観するための「遥拝所」があり、概ね30分ごとに神職が案内してくれます。

This shrine is dedicated to Ama-no-Iwato, a sacred place where Amaterasu is said to have hid in mythology. Because Ama-no-Iwato itself, on the other side of the river, is the sacred object of worship, the shrine has no main hall to house the sacred object, but only a hall of worship. Behind the shrine, there is a “far shrine” where visitors can directly see Ama-no-Iwato, and priests guide visitors to the shrine approximately every 30 minutes.

天岩戸神社 東本宮 Amanoiwato Shrine (Eest Main Shrine)

天岩戸から出て来られた天照大神様が最初に鎮座された地と伝わり、天照大神様をお祀りしています。天岩戸地域の信仰の中心で、西本宮で授与される神札にも東本宮の別名「天岩戸大神宮」の銘があります。社殿の裏手の御神木の根元に泉が湧き、その奥の森は遊歩道を除き禁足地となっています。西本宮前から徒歩５分ほど。

９月２２〜２３日　例大祭

This site is believed to be the first place where Amaterasu settled after emerging from Ama-no-Iwato, and it is dedicated to her worship. The shrine is the center of worship in the Ama-no-Iwato area, and the talismans distributed at the West Main Shrine also bear the name “Ama-no-Iwato Grand Shrine” referring to the East Main Shrine. A spring emerges from the base of a sacred tree behind the shrine pavilion, and the forest beyond is restricted except for a walking trail. It is about a 5-minute walk from in front of the Nishi-Hongu-mae.

天安河原 Riverbed of Ama No Yasukawara

天照大神(アマテラスオオミカミ)が岩戸にお隠れになった際、天地暗黒となり八百万（やおよろず）の神がこの河原に集まり神議されたと伝えられる大洞窟。別名「仰慕ヶ窟（ぎょうぼがいわや）」とも呼ばれています。以前は社のみがあり信仰の対象となっていたが、いつのまにか祈願を行う人たちの手によって石が積まれていくようになりました。現在では無数にある積まれた石が天安河原の神秘的かつ幻想的な雰囲気を一層引き立てています。

This large cave is said to be the place where the eight million deities gathered to discuss what to do when Amaterasu hid herself in Iwato, plunging the world into darkness. Also known as “Gyobogaiwaya,” it was once simply a place of worship, but over time visitors began stacking stones as part of their prayers. Today, the countless stones add to the mystical and enchanting atmosphere of Ama-no-Yasukawara.

高千穂郷八十八社の総杜

約1900年前の垂仁天皇時代に創建されました。主祭神は高千穂皇神と十社大明神で、特に農産業・厄祓・縁結びの神をして広く信仰を集めています。高千穂皇神は日向三代と配偶神の総称で、十社大明神は三毛入野命をはじめとする10柱を祀っています。神社本殿と所蔵品の鉄造狛犬一対は国の重要文化財に指定されています。

The Main Shrine of the 88 Shrines in Takachiho Township.

The shrine was founded about 1,900 years ago during the reign of Emperor Suinin. The principal deities worshipped here are Takachiho Sumegami and Jussha Daimyojin, who are widely revered especially as gods of agriculture, protection from misfortune, and matchmaking. Takachiho Sumegami is a collective name for the three generations of deities of Hyuga and their consorts, while Jussha Daimyojin enshrines 10 deities, including Mikenu no Mikoto. The main hall of the shrine and a pair of iron guardian dogs are designated as National Important Cultural Properties.

芸能と縁結びにご利益があるとされる神社

瓊々杵尊(ににぎのみこと)が天照大神の命を受けてこの国に降臨される途中で天孫一行を道案内をされた猿田彦命(さるたひこのみこと)と天鈿女命(あめのうずめのみこと)が結婚して住まわれた地と伝えられ、切り出したばかりの荒木を利用して急いで宮居を造ったため、荒立宮と名付けられたといわれています。このような言い伝えから縁結びに、ご利益があるとされています。

This shrine is believed to bring

good fortune in performing arts and marriage.

It is said that Sarutahiko no Mikoto and Ame no Uzume no Mikoto, who guided Ninigi no Mikoto on his descent to this land under the orders of Amaterasu, married and lived here. The shrine was named Aratate Shrine because they hastily built a palace using freshly cut wood. Due to this legend, the shrine is considered to bestow blessings for successful relationships and marriages.

八大龍王水神（永の内） Eight Dragon King God of Water Shrine (Naga No Uchi)

古くは「いご様」の名で信仰されてきた水神様です。その名は８体の龍神たちに由来し、さらに1.5kmほど先の馬生木集落にある八大之宮と対をなすと言われます。境内には泉が湧き、水神としてだけでなく、勝負事や商売の神様としても信仰を集めています。

This water deity has been worshipped under the name “Igosama” since ancient times. Its name is derived from the eight dragon gods and is said to be paired with Yatai-no-Miya, located about 1.5 kilometers away in the village of Umawogi. A spring emerges within the shrine grounds, and the deity is worshipped not only as a water god, but also as a god of victory and business.

Enjoy the magnificent scenery of Takachiho from Japan’s tallest railway bridge. The original super carts of the Amaterasu Railway quietly run along the former Takachiho Railway tracks, which were closed due to a typhoon in 2005.

高千穂神楽 Takachiho Yokagura Dance

里ごとに氏神（うじがみ）様を神楽宿と呼ばれる民家や公民館にお招きし、夜を徹して三十三番の神楽を一晩かけて奉納する、昔から受け継がれてきた神事である高千穂夜神楽。天岩戸に隠れた太陽神アマテラスを誘い出そうと、岩戸の前でウズメが踊ったことが神楽の始まりとされています。毎年11月中旬から翌年2月上旬に町内それぞれの集落で奉納され、高千穂神社では11月22日・23日に「神話の高千穂夜神楽まつり」が開催され、三十三番の神楽が奉納されます。

Takachiho Yokagura is a shinto ritual that has been passed down through the generations. The guardian deities are invited to local homes or community centers, known as Kagura Yado, and honored with a night-long performance of thirty-three kagura dances. This practice reenacts the myth where Uzume danced to lure the sun goddess Amaterasu out of hiding from the rock cave. Every year, from mid-November to early February of the following year, this ritual is performed in various villages within the town. Additionally, on November 22nd and 23rd, the Takachiho Shrine hosts the “Takachiho Yokagura Festival”, where all thirty-three kagura dances are performed.

夜神楽の季節以外にも高千穂の夜神楽を楽しめるのが高千穂神楽です。高千穂神社境内の神楽殿で毎晩20時より1時間、三十三番の神楽の中から代表的な4番を公開しています。各集落の神楽の舞手が交代で奉納する本格的な舞が人気。国の重要無形民俗文化財にも指定されています。

Even outside the Takachiho Yokagura season, you can enjoy Yokagura dances at Takachiho Shrine. Four representative dances from the thirty-three kagura are performed at the shrine’s Kagura Hall for one hour every evening, starting at 8 PM. The authentic dances, performed in turn by dancers from various local villages, are very popular. This tradition is also designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
